Nursery Landscape Management
This course covers the
production of plants, shrubs, and ornamental trees for
transplanting to landscape designs. Propagation, designing
plans, installation, maintenance, transportation and careers are
included in the curriculum. A portion of the course will be
dedicated to FFA and its opportunities. Nursery/Landscaping is
available to students who have successfully completed either or
both Agriculture Science and Introduction to Horticulture
Course Frameworks
Project: Landscape Plant Collection
Description:
- Project will contain a collection of
40 specimens. They can be any mix of grasses, trees,
shrubs, and/or weeds.
- Each plant identified must contain a
leaf of that plant. It can also contain a picture, stem,
flower, and/or fruit. The more information you can include,
the easier it will be to identify.
- Must be a plant used in landscaping.
Cannot be a houseplant.
- Lowes, Wal-Mart, Kroger, Hays, Red
Barn, and any other businesses which sell, carry, or
distribute landscape plants no matter where the business is
located is OFF LIMITS.
- Information required for each
specimen:
- Properly identified with Common &
Scientific Names
- Location of Plant – Where did you
locate this plant? Include address and location on the
property.
- Example: 126 E Missouri,
Blytheville. Located on the South side, in front of
the house.
- Leaf Description – Type of leaf,
shape, deciduous or evergreen, etc.
- Flower Description – Any
information about flowers.
- Fruit Description – Does it have
any, color, is it edible, etc.
- Pest Problems – Does this plant
suffer from problems with pests? If so, what pest, what
is the damage, how is the pest controlled, etc?
- Landscape Notes – Information
about where the plant thrives best, soil conditions,
light, etc.
- Specifics about how assignment should
be put together and turned in.
- Should be in a 3-ring binder.
Name and class period should be on outside front of
binder.
- Margins should be 1 inch on all
sides.
- All pages should be typed using a
12 pt font.
- All specimens should have at least
2 pages: 1 for specimen & 1 for additional information.
- All pages should have Student Name
& Class Period in upper right corner.
- All pages should have Name of
Specimen across the top of page starting at left margin.
- Specimen should be pressed flat
and placed on a page by themselves. This should be the
1st page for each specimen. Specimen should
be attached with tape.
- Second page for each specimen
should contain all other information. It is ok to use
more than 2 pages per specimen.
- Specimens should be separated into
three categories: Trees, Shrubs, and Grasses/Weeds.
- Specimens should be arranged in
Alphabetical order by Category then Botanical Name.
- Rubber cement, two-sided tape work
best to attach plant material to sheets.
- Due Dates:
- Project progress will be checked
periodically.
- September 15th, plants
should be collected.
- October 13th, Project
due.
- Possible points:
- 25 points per specimen for a total
of 1000 points
- Project will be graded using a
rubric.
