1938-39 History

Currently we are working on compiling our chapter history.  Here is what we have so far for the 1938-39 school year. 

The following appeared in the Blytheville Courier Newspaper on July 18th, 1938
"Future Farmers go to Camp Couchdale"
A number of the Blytheville Future Farmers of America, accompanied by their sponsor, Freeman Robinson, vocational agriculture instructor in the local high school, went to Camp Couchdale today to spend a week in swimming, fishing, boating, boxing, playing tennis, and softball on the banks of Lake Catherine, 12 miles Northwest of Hot Springs.

One day will be spent in visiting Reghold dam, the millon dollar Veterans' hospital, radio station KTHS, Belvedere dairy, and other points of interest around Hot Springs.

The following boys made the trip.  C.D. Ellis, Everett Craig, Billy Meharg, J.L. Gurley, Theo Gurley, Frank Ashby, Harold Lloyd, Gerald Sutton, J.B. Husband, Charles Gaines, Charles Purtle, "Buddy" Baxter, Rowland Rounabill, and Cecil Austin.

Local FFA Group Wins Honors

Members of the Blytheville chapter of the Future Farmers of America, who have been vacationing for the past week at Camp Couchdale, 11 miles northeast of Hot Springs, won the certificate of awards in three contests in which the competed with 173 other campers representing 11 chapters of the FFA in the state.

The certificates were given for victories of C.D. Ellis and Harold Lloyd in boxing, Harold Lloyd in the tennis singles, and Billy Meharg and Harold Lloyd in ping pong.  The chapter played in the finals of the volley ball, softball and domino matches.

The time at the camp was spent in fishing, swimming, tennis, softball, volley ball, checkers, ping pong, and dominoes.  One day was spent in Hot Springs where the group visited the Reghold dam, the Veterans' hospital, KTHS broadcasting station, bath house Lopege Museum, Fountain Lake and Belvedere dairy.  On the return trip, the state capitol and other points of interest were visited in Little Rock.

Future Farmers go to Fair at Memphis

A large group of the Future Farmers of America of the city high school accompanied by their instructor, Freeman Robinson, went to Memphis today to participate in the activities of the FFA Day at the Mid-South Fair.  The group was to parade today in the opening parade of the fair.

Other members of the local FFA who make up the dairy judging team, which has been choosen to represent Arkansas will return to Memphis to compete in that contest.  They are:  Everett Crate, Eugene Hood, Howard Lloyd, and Charles Abbot as alternate.

Included in the group who went down today were:  Mark Anderson, Meddie Brown, Fred Burgeson, Dent Brown, Charles Bunn, Yancy Caffey, James Carney, Walter Collier, Charles Gaines, J.L. Gurley, Cleo Gurley, Arthur Hudson, James Long, Herbert Koonce, John Mick, Joe OcGhee, Billy Mehart, Harvey Morris, Dallas Mitchell, Wallace Norman, Clyde Perry, Fred Perry, Gerald Sutton, Herman Tinker, Johnny Young. Billy Craig, a former member of the group accompanied then.
